The August center-stage act will be The Magnolia Klezmer Band, who plays an anti-depressive mix of Eastern European Jewish dance music and Yiddish theater tunes blended with American traditional jazz and swing.
The artist demonstrator will be Jeghetto the Puppetmaker. Jeghetto is puppet-maker who wears many hats--he's also a wire-sculptor, hip-hop artist, and woodworker. Check out his inspiring live puppet show.
August's Art Walk includes Melissa Designer Jewelry, Local Artists' Art and Craft Sale at the Old Courthouse, Hillsborough Artists Cooperative and The Skylight Gallery, Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston, Cup A Joe, Callaway Jewelry & Spiral Studios, Sovero Art Gallery & Studio, Hillsborough Gallery of Arts, and the Churton Street Realty Art Gallery. Melissa Designer Jewelry is featuring paintings in oil, acrylic and pastel by Paul Nikitchenko at 112 S. Churton St. The Skylight Gallery is featuring new landscape paintings of local scenes by Michael Brown at 102 W. King St. Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston is featuring paintings and ceramic sculpture by Sue and Susan Waters at 114 W. King St. Cup A Joe is featuring Assemblages made from Recycled Materials by Charron Andrews at 120 W. King St. The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is featuring "Harvest" art glass by Susan Hope and paintings by Linda Carmel at 121D N. Churton St., Suite 1-D. The Churton Street Realty Art Gallery is featuring artwork in various media by artists of Art & Soul Gallery at 121 N. Churton St., Suite 1-C. The Filmmaker's Film Series presents CHUCKLEFEST at the Masonic Lodge at 142 West King St. CHUCKLEFEST returns this month with an all-cartoon program to be screened outdoors at the Masonic Lodge at 8:30 pm with hits from the golden era of movies. So bring your blankets or lawn chairs and be prepared to laugh! The show is appropriate for all ages and is free and open to the public. Local historic sites will be opening offering music and special programming. The Orange County Historical Museum (201 N. Churton St.) hosts "Ears to You!" Volunteers will be roasting and selling roasted ears of corn as a fundraiser. The music is by Carolina Harmony Chorus, barbershop quartet group. It will be the last weekend of the Orange County archaeology exhibit, "Digging History."
The Burwell School Historic Site, (319 N. Churton St.), will be hosting an open air gospel concert on Aug. 29, as part of the town of Hillsborough's Last Friday celebration. The Mt. Bright Baptist Church Choir has been a special performer here for years, and the Burwell School is pleased to, once again, welcome them! Please come and join us on the lawn of our historic, ca. 1821, Antebellum home. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and relax with friends and family as you enjoy complementary lemonade and cookies, while listening to the last sounds of summer. The concert begins at 6pm and is free of charge.
Lift your attitude and move your feet with Mebanesville's music Americana at the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church (102 W. Tryon St). This popular Last Fridays group includes musicians from many areas of the U.S who bring a wide variety of talent and genres that inspire the spirit to move. Enjoy while getting the usual scoop of free ice cream.
Weaver Street Market (Gateway Center, Nash & Kollack St.) will be hosting live music presented by The Lids.
Businesses, located on both sides of Churton and King Streets will hold extended hours and special offerings during the Last Fridays event
