Sunday, March 7 Community Tree Planting at Gold Park
Full Description:
Help Hillsborough’s Waterways by Planting Trees at Gold Park
WHAT: Community Tree Planting Event
WHEN: 1 to 4 p.m. March 7, 2010
WHERE: Gold Park, 415 Dimmocks Mill Road
The Eno River needs you.
Help enhance stream buffers along the river by planting tree seedlings at Hillsborough’s Gold Park. Join other local volunteers from 1 to 4 p.m. March 7 as they gather for a community tree planting event.
No experience is needed. Volunteers will be shown where and how to plant the tree seedlings.
Planting the seedlings will enhance the riparian buffers within Gold Park, which opened last April. The enhancement is required to offset the impact that construction of the park has had on the buffers. The resulting forested stream buffers will help:
Moderate stream temperature.
Provide wildlife food and habitat.
Control erosion.
Reduce flooding.
Filter pollutants from stormwater runoff.
The tree seedlings selected for planting are native species grown in the state’s Piedmont region. Some species of smaller trees or larger shrubs will be planted closest to existing sewer rights-of-way to minimize the chance of tree roots later damaging sewer pipes.
Volunteers should bring gloves and should dress to work outside. Gold Park is located at 415 Dimmocks Mill Road.
For more information on the event or to sign up, contact Stormwater Resource Officer Terry Hackett by e-mail or by phone at 245-2588.
